Global conference on community engagement

The University of Victoria is welcoming more than 300 delegates from around the world to Victoria May 20-22 to discover and highlight the innovative experiences of universities and communities working in partnership.

“UVic’s deep commitment to civic engagement is reflected in this open invitation to researchers, decision makers, community advocates and others involved in community-engaged research to join us this spring and enhance our collective potential to contribute to the public good,” says Vice-President Academic and Provost Reeta Tremblay.

CUVic 2014: Beyond Engagement includes workshops, teaching circles, poster presentations, roundtables, panels, field trips and social networking opportunities.

Community university partnerships are a growing trend as nations and regions seek solutions to social, economic and environmental issues. Community-university engaged research inspires and supports creativity, innovation and action within the institutional, Indigenous, national and global contexts.

“The ongoing work to tackle adversity with knowledge and programs—such as UVic’s community mapping projects, the nursing school's foot care program for homeless and marginalized populations, and CanAssist’s innovative technologies to empower people with disabilities—puts us at the forefront of this growing movement,” says Leslie Brown, Special Advisor to the Provost on Community Engagement and director of UVic’s Institute for Studies and Innovation in Community-University Engagement (ISICUE). “We also hope to move beyond showcasing these engagement efforts, to consider the impact of such work and focus on strengthening our capacity to benefit society.”

Abstracts are now being accepted for workshops, teaching circles and poster presentations. Abstracts should be limited to 250 words and provide a concise statement of the topic or issue to be discussed and a summary of the major findings and conclusions. All submissions should be forwarded to CUVIC@uvic.ca no later than Feb. 14 at midnight PST.
