UVic To Award Seven Honorary Degrees At June Convocation
A former federal cabinet minister, a Shuswap elder and a
world-renowned mathematician are among seven individuals who will be
awarded honorary degrees at the University of Victoria's 2000 spring
convocation, June 7-9.
The seven honorary degree designates are:
Dr. Matsuo Ara, one of Japan's most distinguished scholars in the field of medieval Indian and Islamic Studies. Ara is known internationally for his role in documenting the architectural monuments of Delhi (Doctor of Fine Arts);
Judd Buchanan, businessman, community supporter and public servant, including 12 years as an MP and cabinet minister. He's now known as the "dollar a year man," in reference to his salary as chair of the Canadian Tourism Commission (Doctor of Laws);
Dr. Colin Clark, a pioneer scholar in mathematics whose contributions are recognized in three distinct disciplines --mathematics, economics and biology. Clark is a professor emeritus of mathematics at UBC (Doctor of Science);
Ronald Cleminson, an arms control and verification expert and career public servant who has worked tirelessly to advance the cause of global peace through non-proliferation and arms control (Doctor of Laws);
Henryk Gorecki, one of Poland's major contemporary composers who is increasingly acknowledged in the West for works that transcend cultural and political boundaries (Doctor of Music);
Mary Thomas, a Secwepemc (Shuswap) elder who has devoted her life to preserving the culture and well-being of her people and to promoting sound environmental practices among native and non-native adults and youth (Doctor of Laws);
Bob Wright, president and chair of the Oak Bay Marine Group of Companies, which is the largest sport fishing operation in North America. Wright has combined his business acumen with years of community leadership (Doctor of Laws).
