Launch of Indigenous nursing master’s a historic occasion

Fifty delegates from six universities across BC, including UVic, gathered in Penticton to launch a master’s of Indigenous nursing research project. The first-of-its-kind master’s degree combines high-level professional training with community-driven interventions designed to meet the needs of Indigenous Peoples living in rural and remote areas.

Bridging knowledges for land and water stewardship

What happens when Indigenous People lead resource decision-making on their own terms, across their own traditional territories? Communities in Tanzania and Canada are documenting and sharing their experiences, supported by a University of Victoria Department of Geography project that illustrates how partnerships can advance the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Link between telescopes reveals a galactic fossil

UVic astronomer Kim Venn co-led an international team that found one of these traces—a first-of-its-kind discovery that was published in Nature earlier this year. Not only was it a breakthrough for what they found—a star cluster with the lowest concentration of metals ever observed—it was made possible by making two ground-based telescopes work together in a new way.
