Normal entry points for first-year courses

Placement in a first year language course depends on your current level of proficiency.
See the recommendations below or contact the undergraduate adviser in your area of studies for more information.

Contact Academic Advising for Humanities, Science and Social Sciences for questions about graduation, CAPP reports, satisfying majors and minors in other departments, etc. They can also help with university policies and procedures.

French and Francophone Studies

FRAN 100 - Intensive French I

3.0 units

Introduction to French for students with no previous knowledge of French. Acquisition of language and intercultural competencies. This intensive course brings students to a A1 level of the European Common Framework for Languages.

Note(s)

  • Credit will be granted for only one of FRAN 100, FREN 100, FREN 102, FREN 103, FREN 105.
  • Next course in sequence: FRAN 120.
  • Not open to students with French 11 or equivalent in the last two years.
  • Not open to students with French 12.
  • Not open to students with French immersion at any time.

 

Acquisition of language and intercultural competencies to enable reading, writing, speaking and comprehension at the intermediate level. Brings students to a A2 level of the European Common Framework for Languages.

 

Note(s)

  • Credit will be granted for only one of FRAN 120, FREN 106, FREN 107, FREN 160.
  • Normal entry point for students with French 11.
  • Not open to students with French 12 in the last two years, or French Immersion to Grade 8.

  • Complete 1 of the following
    • Complete all of:
      • FRAN100 - Intensive French I (3.0)
    • French 11
    • or permission of the school.

3.0 units
 

Acquisition of intermediate language and intercultural competencies to facilitate communication and interaction in everyday and diverse contexts, in oral and written forms. Exploration of differences and cultural diversities in French-speaking regions and countries. Brings students to a B1 level of the European Common Framework for Languages.

  • Complete 1 of the following
    • Complete all of:
      • FRAN120 - Intensive French II (3.0)
      • immersion up to Grade 10
      • French 12
      • permission of the school.
 
 
 

Introduction to the development of intermediate language skills and intercultural competencies to facilitate communication and interaction in everyday and diverse contexts (school, leisure), through oral and written practice. Advances to a B1 level of the European Common Framework for Languages. Prepares for intermediate (B1.2) study upon completion.

  • Credit will be granted for only one of FRAN 171, FRAN 170.

Acquisition of upper-intermediate language and intercultural competencies. Emphasizes the four main skills of writing, reading, speaking and listening. This intensive course brings students to a B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

  • Credit will be granted for only one of FRAN 180, FREN 175, FREN 180, FREN 181, FREN 182, FREN 190, FREN 195.
  • Normal entry point for student with French Immersion to Grade 12.

    • Complete all of:
      • FRAN170 - Intensive French III (3)
    • French immersion to Grade 12.

Acquisition of upper-intermediate language and intercultural skills, with a strong focus on cultural expression and communicative competencies in writing, reading, speaking and listening. By end of course, reaches the B2.1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

  • Credit will be granted for only one of FRAN 181, FRAN 180.

Sequel to FRAN 181. Development of upper-intermediate language skills and intercultural competencies to achieve greater fluency and spontaneity, enabling effortless interactions with native speakers. Advances to a B2.2 level of the European Common Framework for Languages. Prepares for advanced (C1) study upon completion.

  • Credit will be granted for only one of FRAN 182, FRAN 180.

 

Prerequisites

  • Complete all of:
    • FRAN181 - Level B2.1 French (1.5)
