Lisa McEwen is Head of Clinico-genomics at Helix, a precision health company building the world's largest clinico-genomic database. She leads a multidisciplinary team of genomics engineers, clinical informaticists, and data scientists focused on harmonizing and integrating EHR and claims data from health systems across North America — linking these standardized clinical datasets with exome sequencing data to support real-world evidence generation at population scale. A central passion of her work is the challenge of standardizing clinical data across diverse health systems, and building the robust data infrastructure that makes large-scale, multi-site genomic research possible. She is particularly interested in the application of AI and machine learning to high-dimensional clinico-genomic data, and in how well-curated, standardized datasets unlock the potential of these methods to generate novel clinical and scientific insights.
Lisa completed a PhD in the Department of Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia in 2018. Her doctoral research focused on population genomics and epigenomics across the human life course, resulting in over 35 peer-reviewed publications and multiple scholarships and awards. Prior to Helix, she worked at Island Health in Victoria, BC, as a Clinical Data Consultant in Decision Support, where she developed expertise in clinical data standardization and the application of electronic health record data to support health authority decision-making.
She remains committed to advancing the field of clinical data science through academic teaching, knowledge translation, and collaborative research.
