Robin and Jane Hall Business Award
Jane Hall established this award in honour of her late husband, Robin Leigh Hall. She knows that Robin would be delighted with the creation of this fund, as he would, in effect, be saying thank you to the School for all the many happy years he was involved, and for the honour they bestowed on him in January 2013.
Robin was born in Sydney, Australia on July 4, 1927. At 16, he joined the Royal Australian Navy as a gunner and spent three years in the Pacific during World War II. After beginning a career in advertising in Sydney, Robin left for London, England, where he was an advertising copywriter. Moving to Canada in 1952, he worked at Young & Rubicam and was a founding staffer at Ogilvy & Mather Canada. Later, he was Vice-President, Marketing, and then President of Bristol-Myers, Canada. In 1971, he founded MetroMarket Newspapers, a marketing organization for Canada's 10 largest newspapers. In 1976, he launched an international newspaper called Global News. He and Jane, his last and best love, started The Glass Store in Toronto, which was franchised in Ontario and BC. When they sold the business, they decided to move to Victoria, BC. In 1988, they moved to Sidney to be closer to their boat. Robin and Jane cruised much of the world on much larger ships and also enjoyed many land tours.
Robin served on the boards of two venture capital and startup companies, was a founding advisor to the University of Victoria Faculty of Business, and was on the Board of the Greater Victoria Hospitals Foundation, the Sidney Economic Development Committee and the Panorama Recreation Commission. He was an inspiration to advertisers and marketers, and to the many young men and women he mentored through the years. Rob always gave back, always willing to talk to someone who wanted to move ahead, always willing to write the article, and give the speech that might motivate others to succeed.
Jane Hall spent 38 incredibly happy years with Robin, a man who matched her in every aspect of life. They were a great team, and shared many exciting ventures and adventures, including their support of the Faculty/School of Business.
Jane had her own very successful career, lastly in business as Senior Vice-President, Account and Strategic Planning, MacLaren Advertising. When they moved to Vancouver Island, she continued for many years to provide "branding" advice to large private industry clients and provincial and municipal governments. Jane did the marketing research to help position the new Faculty of Business and continued her involvement with the School through lecturing to the MBA students on qualitative marketing research as well as mentoring several MBA students.
