John and Ann McLaren Award

John McLaren taught and was the first Lansdowne Professor of Law at UVic, from 1987 to 2006. He gave classes in both Legal History and Compensation Law. His research and scholarship has lain predominantly in Canadian and Comparative Colonial Legal History, often with reference to the law's treatment of racialized and ethnic minority communities, especially those of Chinese, South Asian and Doukhobor origin. He has also been active in the wider community in fostering social justice projects, in particular for over 30 years in refugee sponsorship and support.

Ann McLaren earned a Diploma in Linguistics from UVic in the early 1990s, and then for 10 years taught English as a Second Language at Victoria's Camosun College. She appreciated, in particular, working with immigrants from points around the globe, in helping them improve their language skills. She has also had a long-standing commitment to helping former refugees.
