Jens is a professor of computer science at the University of Victoria, where he serves as associate dean of professional programs in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. He holds a doctoral degree from the University of Paderborn, Germany, and is a licensed professional engineer (PEng) in British Columbia. He is also affiliated with the School of Health Information Science and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia.
Jens's research focuses on software safety and security engineering methods and tools, with an explicit interest in systems that incorporate AI components and functionality. Much of his work is situated in health care and medical informatics, though he also investigates other safety- and security-critical domains such as transportation and autonomous vehicles. His research includes formal methods, among them graph-based approaches and graph transformation systems, and explores effective ways to create assurances and certifications for critical software-intensive systems.
