UVic Rocketry participates in 2019 Spaceport America Cup

After another long year of designing, manufacturing, and testing, UVic Rocketry's latest rocket Hyak-2 was ready to make the long trek to the 2019 Spaceport America Cup in New Mexico, USA. The rocket, which stands at 12 ft tall, was designed to fly at almost twice the speed of sound to a height of 30,000 ft.3,000 km of driving and three boiling days in the New Mexico desert

Futuristic tissue engineering

When University of Victoria biomedical engineer Mohsen Akbari gets talking about the futuristic microfibres being created in his lab to solve medical mysteries, it sounds just about as far away from nature as you can get. But in fact, nature is both inspiration and blueprint for the work of the Laboratory for Innovation in Microengineering (LiME). Researchers at the multi-discipline lab study what nature already does brilliantly, then work to recreate that in the lab to improve how to treat disease and administer drugs.

UVic Formula Hybrid

UVic Hybrid placed first at this year's international SAE Formula Hybrid competition held in Loudon, New Hampshire. This competition comprised of 35 international student engineering teams competing in design, project management, and dynamic events including autocross, endurance, and acceleration runs.

FSAE 2019 Competition

UVic Submarine Racing Sub The UVic Submarine racing club is featured on CTV National News, Island News and the Times Colonist. The submarine club is scheduled to attend its first competition in Gosport, England, from July 3 to 12. The race will be at a depth of four or five metres and includes a slalom course at a maritime testing facility. UVic Mech Alumni Successfully Get Electron Rocket to Low Earth Orbit

Michael Pearson, Leo McKee-Reid (Camosun), Shane Sagar, Cass Hussmann, Graeme Ramsey, and Simon Moffatt in front of Rocket Lab headquarters in Auckland, New Zealand On the morning of January 21st, 2018, only ten countries in history had the capabilities to launch objects into orbit. By mid-afternoon of that same day there were eleven. At 2:43 PM NZDT the Electron rocket successfully launched from the Mahia Peninsula in New Zealand, delivering four payloads into two different orbits. At liftoff, five of the cheering employees were either current or former UVic students with a Camosun alumni in the mix.

Pacific Regional Institute for Marine Energy Discovery receives $1.4 funding from WD

Canada’s off-grid remote communities, the majority of which are Indigenous, are reliant on expensive and dirty diesel-fueled electricity generation. BC is home to a disproportionately large number of these communities. For them, marine energy—wind, wave and tidal—is the predominant local renewable energy option. What’s holding back many of these communities from investing in marine renewable technologies is the lack of available data to assess the raw resource, how they can harness the resource, and how they can synchronize a marine energy supply with local demand.

Nov 3, Since its inception in 2009, the West Coast Wave Initiative (WCWI) has grown to become the centre of Canadian wave energy research and development. The WCWI—hosted by the Institute for Integrated Energy Systems (IESVic) at the University of Victoria—is a multi-disciplinary group of academics and industry members investigating the feasibility of wave energy conversion in British Columbia. Brad Buckham is the Director of WCWI. Terry Tarle is the President and CEO of AXYS Technologies of Sidney, BC, one of WCWI’s key partners. AXYS built all five buoys currently deployed by WCWI off the coast of Vancouver Island.
