Long service recognition looks a little different this year for our 105 long service colleagues. Even though we are unable to host an in-person event we want to acknowledge and thank our colleagues who have dedicated a cumulative of 3155 years of service on campus.

30 years ago in 1990

  • Norma Mickelson serves as the first female president of the UVic Faculty Association (1989-1990).
  • David Strong is installed as president with the first ever “Installation Week” – including a special convocation, music and theatre exhibitions, lectures, sports etc. – attracting 30,000 people to campus.
  • Ghost is the highest grossing movie of the year at $217,631,306.
  • “Hold-On” by Wilson Philips tops the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles.
  • Cheers is the number one Nielsen rating TV show.
  • Nelson Mandela is released after 27 years imprisonment in South Africa.

  • The Opening Night Scholarship is born to support departmental shows at the new Phoenix Theatre.
  • Back to the Future is the top grossing movie of the year.
  • The Cosby Show tops the Nielsen ratings.
  • Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A is the best performing album of the year.
  • Rick Hansen begins his around the world Man in Motion tour in Vancouver to raise money for spinal cord research.

40 years ago in 1980

  • The UVic Speakers Bureau is launched.
  • The Empire Strikes Back is the top grossing movie of the year.
  • Dallas is the top Nielsen rated TV show.
  • “Call me” by Blondie tops the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles chart.
  • CNN becomes the first 24hrs News Station.
  • The first 1 GB hard drive costs $40,000 and weighs over 500 pounds.
  • Terry Fox begins his Marathon of Hope in St. John's, NL to raise money for cancer research.

45 years ago in 1975

  • The men's soccer team wins UVic’s first ever CIAU Championship.
  • The first summer blockbuster movie, Jaws, is released.
  • "Love Will Keep Us Together" by The Captain and Tennille tops the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles chart.
  • All in the Family is the most popular Nielsen rated TV show.
  • The United Nations declares 1975 to be International Women’s Year.
  • The Vietnam War ends.
  • The last section of the CN Tower, the world's highest free-standing structure at the time, is erected.
