OAC Workshops

Introduction to Online Academic Community

(OAC, 1 hour workshop)

This workshop will teach you the basics of getting started within the OAC and creating your own blog. We will cover:

  • What is the OAC
  • Uses and examples
  • The Dashboard
  • Profile settings
  • Creating a site
  • Choosing a theme
  • Controlling access and adding users
  • Posts and pages
  • Where to go for support

Whipping up a website

(OAC, 1 hour workshop)

This workshop will review some basic practices in building a website within the OAC. We will cover

  • using a static page
  • categories in the menu
  • working with widgets
  • creating pages and
  • managing content

Introduction to the Divi theme

(OAC, 1 hour workshop)

This workshop will teach you the basics of the Divi theme. We will cover:

  • Using the Page Builder
  • Working with modules
  • Layouts

Intermediate Divi

(OAC, 1 hour workshop)

Building off our Introduction to Divi workshop, this intermediate session will delve into modules, layouts, and touching on projects within the theme. We will cover more of the theme options as well as some tips and tricks we’ve picked up since we started learning the theme!

Media, menus, and managing your OAC site

Looking for your library? Want to post a PDF? Interesting in making a marvelous menu? This session is for you! We will cover the basics of the media library and uploading to your OAC site, including PDF documents. This session will review linking to internal and external sites as well as creating the menu you have been dreaming about.

Teaching in the OAC

This workshop will revisit the OAC as a teaching tool. We will go over examples of how instructors have and can use Course sites, individual student blogs and create a collaborative and social approach to learning.

Jonesin' for a job: Prepping for your career using OAC

Learn how to create a personal website and e-portfolio that helps you stand out from the crowd during your job search.

CourseSpaces Workshops

CourseSpaces Introductory Workshop

(CourseSpaces, 60 minute workshop)

In this workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of CourseSpaces and get started building your course. By the end of the hour, you will know how to:

  • Control basic course settings
  • Add side blocks (course menu, calendar, etc.)
  • Set up your course page: add titles, highlighting blocks, move and duplicate content, add images
  • Update your Profile settings
  • Enroll TAs and other users
  • Send announcements through the news forum
  • Add resources: label, files, folder, URL, page, book
  • Add assignments and forums (activities)

Advanced Assignment Workshop

(CourseSpaces, 60 minute workshop)

A comprehensive review of the functions available via the Assignment module, including: General Assignment settings, Marking Workflow, Rubrics, Marking guides, providing feedback, granting extensions, and a brief look at how this module integrates with the CourseSpaces Gradebook.

This workshop is recommended for experienced CourseSpaces users and those who have previously completed CourseSpaces Nuts and Bolts.

Advanced Quiz Workshop

(CourseSpaces, 1 hour workshop)

A comprehensive review of the functions available via the Quiz Module, including: General quiz settings, All question types, User/Group Overrides, Question Banks, Wildcard variables, and a brief look at how the Quiz module integrates with the CourseSpaces Gradebook.

This workshop is recommended for experienced CourseSpaces users and those who have previously completed CourseSpaces Nuts and Bolts.

Engaging Students: Connect with CourseSpaces

(CourseSpaces, 1 hour workshop)

In this workshop, you will learn how to engage students in your CourseSpaces site, including tips on using audio/video, allowing students to create their own groups, having students learn from each other, and finding out what students think and know using feedback.

Making the grade: How to use the gradebook effectively

(CourseSpaces, 1 hour workshop)

In this workshop, you will learn how to set up the gradebook in accord with your syllabus and how to grade assignments.

Digital chocolate: Badges in CourseSpaces

(CourseSpaces, 60- 90 minutes)

Join guest facilitator and badge-user Dr. Christopher Willmore from Economics to talk about how badges can motivate students and help you keep track of student learning.  Make a simple badge using PowerPoint and learn how to integrate badge use into your class. 

Tame CourseSpaces with time savers

(CourseSpaces, 1 hour workshop)

Save yourself some time when using CourseSpaces by unlocking the potential of the activities block, mass grading capabilities, and zip file grading.

Group work: Groups, groupings, and forums

(CourseSpaces, 1 hour workshop)

In this workshop you will learn how to effectively use groups, groupings and forum activities to support collaborative learning.

Interactive features: Choice, voice, and chat

(CourseSpaces, 1 hour workshop)

In this workshop you will learn how to use the choice, feedback, and chat activities to increase interaction in and out of the classroom.

Managing CourseSpaces for large classes

(CourseSpaces, 1 hour workshop)

In this session, you will learn how to manage CourseSpaces effectively for large classes: cross-listing sections, groups, groupings, and more.

Introduction to iClicker

(iClicker, 1 hour workshop)

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of using the iClicker remote polling system to engage your class:

  • Installing the software
  • Creating a class
  • Downloading and adding your roster file
  • Synchronizing your class with the iClicker software gradebook
  • How to start a poll and different polling questions that can be used
