Despite an extended training block littered with obstacles leading up to Tokyo 2021, UVic Vikes-connected athletes and alumni kept going, and significantly contributed to Team
Canada's success on the world stage.
University of Victoria men's rugby alumnus Nathan Hirayama, alongside Ontario-raised basketball player Miranda Ayim, both 33, were named Canadian co-flagbearers this week by Prime
Minister Justin Trudeau.
Five UVic Vikes men’s rugby players are making the trip to Wellington, New Zealand, and Las Vegas, Nevada, this month with the Canadian Sevens men’s rugby team. The Vikes five make
up over one-third of the national Sevens roster. Nathan Hirayama has been named team captain and is joined by Vikes teammates Sean Duke, Adam Kleeberger and Keaton Styles, and recently added
Vikes player Beau Parker.
Nine current or former students are competing in the XIX Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India. They are current Vikes Sean Duke, Nathan Hirayama and Phil Mack (rugby); former Vikes
Neil Meechan (rugby), MacKenzie Downing (swimming), and Ali Lee, Katie Collison and Thea Culley (field hockey) and UVic student Ryan Cochrane (swimming).
