Bill Gaston
A second Giller Prize for Esi Edugyan
The Ring
Internationally acclaimed UVic writing alumna Esi Edugyan has won the 2018 Scotiabank Giller Prize for her latest novel, Washington Black. Edugyan wins $100,000 on this, the 25th anniversary of Canada’s richest literary award—and also earns the distinction of being one of only three authors to twice win the Giller Prize, alongside M.G. Vassanji and Alice Munro.
November Ringers
The Ring
Bill Gaston (writing) has won the 2018 City of Victoria Butler Book Prize. Separately, Brad Buckham (engineering) and David Nelles (School of Earth and Ocean Sciences) were honoured with a Teaching Award of Excellence by Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia at their annual conference last month.
2016 Craigdarroch Research Awards
The Ring
An ocean explorer striving to preserve fragile marine ecosystems. A physicist unlocking the secrets of the universe. An oceanographer who makes science open and accessible to everyone. A writer who helps us interpret the trials and tribulations of modern life. And two engineers and an entrepreneur who came up with a brilliant idea and ran with it.
Another award for Bill Gaston
The Ring
Department of Writing chair Bill Gaston won the Gold award in the fiction category at the recent National Magazine Awards. His winning story, "Four Corners", appeared in the Winter issue of Event magazine, Douglas College's thrice-yearly literary review. Gaston's previously wins at the National Magazine Awards include honorary mention for his stories "The Night Window" (published in the Malahat Review) in 2005, and "Mount Appetite" (Malahat Review) in 2001.
Appetite for the Stage
The Ring
Department of Writing chair and celebrated author Bill Gaston has now adapted his acclaimed short story "Mount Appetite" for the stage, in partnership with his wife, fellow novelist Dede Crane. The solo show Mount Appetite was recently presented as a staged reading at the 2011 edition of the Belfry Theatre's annual Spark Festival, as directed by David Ferry and performed by Theatre SKAM artistic producer Matthew Payne (both UVic alumni). This is the second play for Gaston, who also penned 1994's Yardsale. Mount Appetite, the original collection of short stories, was nominated for the 2002 Giller Prize.
