UVic particle physics research
The Ring
Try to imagine holding one trillion subatomic particles between two cupped hands. The elaborate choreography of subatomic particles would of course be invisible to the naked eye, but for years now, UVic experts have been tracking the complexities of this very elusive behavior using sophisticated equipment. In recent months, their research has brought us even closer to holding the answers to the beginnings of the universe and its building blocks.

On July 4, the triumphant cheering from scientists and armchair cosmologists was thunderous in response to the announcement of the latest results in physicists' search for the elusive Higgs boson. And a large group of UVic researchers who have had significant involvement in the experiments had good reason to join in the celebrations.

It may not have the same sex appeal as the discovery of the elusive Higgs boson, but there’s another related news story that recently rocked the particle physics world. And it too has a strong University of Victoria connection.

You can’t hear it. You certainly can’t see it. But after telltale signs this winter, the world can be more convinced that the Higgs boson might be all around us. The ATLAS team from UVic played a role in the latest announcement of another round of new data from the Large Hadron Collider.
BC particle accelerator project
The Ring
UVic is leading a consortium of 13 universities to design and build a next-generation linear accelerator at TRIUMF, Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics. On Nov. 1, ground was broken on the $62.9-million Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory (ARIEL) that will be used to demonstrate new ways to solve medical isotope shortages, keep BC and Canada leading in particle and nuclear physics and create 160 permanent jobs. The BC government is providing $30.7 million for the project. ARIEL is to be operational in 2015. More: http://bit.ly/sznYBm
