From Russia with love
Kristina Frolova graduates this November with a degree in civil engineering, the same degree as her parents, uncles, aunts and grandmother. "Civil engineering must be in my genes," says the international student who came to Canada from Russia when she was 18. "I think it's embedded in me in some way."

When UVic's new civil engineering program launched in 2013 with a clear focus on sustainability and Indigenous communities, it caught the attention of Kear Porttris. The program's emphasis on making the best use of natural resources and lessening environmental burdens was immediately appealing.

The Ring
When UVic’s civil engineering program first launched in 2013, nested in mechanical engineering, its intent was to grow into the go-to program in Canada for green civil engineering. Under the direction of new chair, industrial ecologist Chris Kennedy, the fledgling department is taking a big step forward.
