Art history
Impact Chair focuses on Indigenous art practices
Art has the power to both inspire and be a powerful catalyst for change, says inaugural Impact Chair in Indigenous Art Practices Carey Newman of UVic’s Faculty of Fine Arts.
A love of objects and a passion for art history
The Ring
What compels someone to study art history? It could be a passion for the life and work of a certain artist, like Frida Kahlo, or a fascination with a specific period of visual history, like the Renaissance. But for Josie Greenhill, graduating this month with a BA Honours in Art History and Visual Studies (AHVS), her inspiration came from a movie about Jack and Rose.
Curating achievement
The Ring
Some students start in Fine Arts, while others find their way here. Slide History in Art Honours student Regan Shrumm in the latter category. After starting in the English department, Shrumm found her way to the far side of the Ring Road when she signed up for an elective on Impressionism. She liked it so much she took other History in Art electives, and then simply decided to switch midway through her first year.
Take HIA's Christmas Quiz
The Ring
There’s nothing like the winter holidays for doing quizzes, and this year the Department of History in Art has created their own Christmas Quiz for your enjoyment. Sorry, it’s not a compilation of famous Santas or name-the-actor-playing Scrooge, but something far more ambitious and department-appropriate.
Grad students launch Articulate
The Ring
History in Art graduate students have launched Articulate, a new peer-reviewed, online art historical journal. Citing a dearth of publishing opportunities for graduate students in art history, founding co-editors Randip Bakshi, Sara Checkley and Jennifer Cador decided to create new opportunities for their colleagues themselves. “Publishing is absolutely a requirement if you’re trying to become a professor, but it’s difficult to do at the grad student level when there are so few graduate journals in the field,” says Cador. Global in scope and engaging with diverse cultures and time periods, Articulate also hopes to raise the national profile of UVic’s History in Art department. Find it online at http://journals.uvic.ca/index.php/articulate.
Milwright book "Outstanding"
The Ring
History in Art associate professor Marcus Milwright’s An Introduction to Islamic Archaeology (Edinburgh University Press, 2010) has been named an Outstanding Academic Title of 2011 by the magazine, Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries. Peer reviewed by Harvard archaeology professor C.C. Lamberg-Karlovsky, Milwright’s textbook is described as “an outstanding introduction that can be read with profit by general readers as well as professionals . . . highly recommended.” Milwright, the director of UVic’s Medieval Studies program, is also speaking at an international conference devoted to the Hajj at the British Museum in March, prior to an April residency at the prestigious Shangri La Centre for Islamic Arts and Cultures in Honolulu.
