Anniversary
A visit to India and a 150th milestone
Three delegates from UVic landed in India just ahead of the 150th anniversary of Gandhi’s birth for an international symposium organized by UVic’s Budd Hall and UNESCO co-chair Rajesh Tandon to explore concepts of community-based research in the context of Gandhian principles.
Malahat Review: 50 years
The first edition of The Malahat Review came off the presses the same year as Expo ’67 was in Montreal and the first moon landing was still two years away. In its 50-year run, this revered literary journal has served as a springboard for some of the most recognizable names in Canadian publishing.
The Malahat Review celebrates golden anniversary
One of Canada’s leading literary journals is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Established in 1967, The Malahat Review has featured emerging and established writers, discovered promising new talent and presented perceptive critical comment on other works.
UVic's participation in Canada's 150th
Canada will mark the 150th anniversary of the country's 1867 Confederation on July 1. As part of the sesquicentennial, UVic is holding a series of five signature events throughout 2017 under the theme "The Edge of what's next" to explore key opportunities and challenges facing Canadians over the next 50 years.
Shostakovich cycle marks quartet’s anniversary
From one generation to the next, teachers pass along the skills and techniques instilled in them by their mentors. Now, the School of Music’s internationally acclaimed Lafayette String Quartet will honour their own mentor with a rare performance cycle of all 15 string quartets by 20th century Soviet composer, Dmitri Shostakovich.
Q&A: Michael Best
April 23, 2016 is the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. Professor Emeritus Michael Best — an early trailblazer who launched Internet Shakespeare Editions (ISE) in 1996 even before the world-wide web totally swept the globe — explains the lasting impact of Shakespeare’s oeuvre and why people remain enamoured with the Bard of Avon. UVic is a leader in the fields of Shakespearean study, Renaissance literature and digital humanities, and its English language and literatures programs are ranked in the top 200 in the world by the QS Subject Rankings.
Family Centre marks 20 years
Occupying a modest, two-bedroom suite within the Family Housing complex on Lam Circle, the UVic Family Centre was intended as a family health unit. Twenty years later, it has evolved into something much more, says director Elizabeth Quong, “and that’s a good thing.”
40th anniversary of UVic Law
2015 is a banner year for UVic Law: its 40th anniversary. We often think of UVic Law as a young faculty, but it has now delivered four decades of first-class legal education. On March 6 and 7, the faculty will celebrate this milestone with a series of events for alumni, faculty, students and friends. It is a time to take stock. What kind of law school is UVic? What distinctive contributions has it made to Canadian legal education over the last 40 years? Or, to put the question with a little more edge: Would British Columbia, would Canada, be any different if UVic Law had not been founded?
Local heroes lauded at 2014 VLAs
On Feb. 26 at the Crystal Garden, over 400 guests celebrated 21 extraordinary nominees in eight award categories at a special 10th anniversary gala of the Victoria Leadership Awards (VLAs). A number of the community heroes celebrated last night are either from, or affiliated with, the university.

UVic@100
What will UVic be like on its 100th anniversary? Last month, The Ring asked all forward-looking members of the UVic community to unleash their imaginations and describe UVic in 2063. Our judges awarded first prize to Cheryl Hebb, director of campus-based fundraising in the Development Office. Runner-up prize went to fourth-year biology student Ryan Heron.
UVic@100 Contest
At UVic, celebrating our 50th year is not just about our past. It’s also about our future. And, at The Ring, we are encouraging all forward-looking members of the community to share their vision of our university on its future centenary. So we’re launching the UVic@100 competition.
RING RETRO: 25th anniversary
Half a UVic lifetime ago, then-President Howard Petch delivered his 25th anniversary message. Reading it today, much is familiar, though much has changed.
Great Moments
So many great moments! The University of Victoria has witnessed many significant moments during its 50‑year history. Many of these have contributed to UVic’s development into a world-leading research-intensive university while others have helped UVic make a difference in the world. Many other great moments have been of a more personal nature, uniquely experienced by UVic students, staff, faculty and community members as the campus has grown and changed.
Celebration of excellence
On Oct. 16, to celebrate the university’s global, national and local community impact, UVic paid tribute to five remarkable alumni whose inspiring stories of personal and professional accomplishment exemplify the university’s tradition of excellence. A Celebration of 50 Years of Excellence, held at the Crystal Garden in Victoria, also commemorated UVic’s path-breaking 30-year partnership with East China Normal University (ECNU).
