How to purchase your orange t-shirt

As of July 18, the UVic Bookstore will be taking departmental pre-orders for this year's tees in support of Orange Shirt Day, coinciding with National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. On this day we wear orange to honour the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools, the ones who did not make it home and the ones who still feel the lasting impacts among our families, friends and communities.

Orange t-shirts can be purchased for $25.00 + tax. All proceeds will go towards supporting the Elders Engagement Fund, the Witness Blanket Project or the Orange Shirt Society. Additional donations can also be made directly to the initiatives.

The artwork on the orange shirts is titled “Heart and hands” created by Carey Newman Hayalthkin’geme (Kwakwaka'wakw/Coast Salish).

"This design was made to honour the children who died in residential schools. The hearts express love for all those in unmarked graves and compassion for the families and communities who waited for them to be found. The small and colourful hands remind us of the uniqueness and beauty of every child. Taken together, they represent our commitment to listen to our hearts and use our hands, to do the work that needs to be done.

The visceral confirmation of Survivor accounts that has come from locating these graves has affected many of us on an emotional level. It has changed the way that many people think and feel about our histories and current realities in Canada." – C.Newman

Departments interested in ordering these shirts for their staff may reserve their order here. This site is for DEPARTMENT pre-orders only.
