Statement on Iran

We are saddened to see the situation in Iran continue to escalate. We are closely watching what is happening at institutions like the Sharif University of Technology and are deeply concerned for the safety and wellbeing of students, staff and faculty at this university and others in Iran.

Many members of the UVic community have deep connections to Iran, including connections to family, friends and colleagues living in Iran today. You are all in our thoughts and we’re here to support you. We ask everyone in our UVic community to be kind, to listen and learn more about ways to help people who may be struggling. This can and should include demonstrating flexibility to create space for people to attend to their community needs, and to grieve and support others in their lives as news from and about Iran may have a profound effects on their mental and physical health.

Here in Canada, we can often take freedom of speech and expression for granted and it’s important to remember that students and citizens of other countries are sometimes not afforded these same rights. For those impacted by this devastating situation in Iran, please know that you are not alone; the UVic community is here for you and we have on-campus supports for students, staff and faculty who may need them.
