$2.1 million for UVic researchers in the human sciences

UVic faculty members have been awarded $2.1 million in new funding resulting from national research grant competitions announced today by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

Twenty UVic projects will receive $1.9 million under SSHRC’s Standard Research Grants program, an increase of 47 per cent over last year’s funding amount. The new funding will support a wide range of research on social, economic and cultural topics, including investigations of political change in turn-of-the-century China, life-career development for rural and First Nations youth, and self-employment among immigrants to Canada. Recipients include researchers from the faculties of education, fine arts, human and social development, humanities, and social sciences.

In addition, Dr. Wolff-Michael Roth of the faculty of education, was awarded $204,000 under SSHRC’s Initiatives on the New Economy program for a project on “Navigating the knowledge boundaries between formal education and workplace.”

“These excellent results attest to the high quality of research conducted by humanists and social scientists at UVic,” says vice president research Dr. Martin Taylor. “We are particularly pleased at the strong showing by recently hired faculty members in these rigorous peer-reviewed competitions.”

Funding for UVic projects was part of a national announcement of SSHRC funding of $73 million for 835 research projects across Canada.

A complete list of the projects funded is available on the SSHRC Web site www.sshrc.ca.
