Day of the Dead

Latin American Studies celebrated Día de Muertos last week with music, art, food, face painting and an altar to honour people's late loved ones. The event included music from Mexico’s Chroma String Quartet, who are studying at UVic, as well as complementary hot chocolate and baked bread from the Latinos Without Borders Student Club.

Rethinking culture

Hector Vazquez Cordoba, a PhD student in the Faculty of Education, came to UVic in response to a calling he felt to enhance music education in schools throughout Mexico. Now an accomplished violinist and tenured member of the Orquesta Universitaria de Música Popular in Xalapa, Hector wanted to bring classical music to young people in small communities.
