New publication highlights richness of Victoria’s arts community

UVic Libraries recently launched its latest publication, [untitled]: The Artists’ Archives at the University of Victoria Libraries, exploring the archives of four celebrated local artists in Special Collections and University Archives. The publication is presented as a series of four interrelated booklets—each told through the voice of a writer closely associated with them, and packaged in a limited-edition portfolio.

UVic graduate Joseph Erlic and his brothers, Jure and Martin, created HoopLight, a fun new way to play basketball. The hoop lights up with a flash that throws a rainbow of pulsing lights when a basket is scored.

Audain professor makes history again with Witness Blanket

The Witness Blanket by Carey Newman, UVic’s sixth Audain Professor of Contemporary Art Practice of the Pacific Northwest with UVic’s Department of Visual Arts, is the centrepiece of a historic agreement which Newman signed April 12 with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. It unites Western legal principles with Indigenous ways of knowing and being. UVic Law plans to incorporate the agreement into its curriculum.

Cultural re-centring model

How does one “speak back” to violence experienced by Indigenous girls, young women, two-spirit youth, even whole communities impacted from centuries of oppression? This question frames the work of Sisters Rising, an Indigenous-led, community-based research project that honours Indigenous youth who have experienced sexualized, gender-based violence by offering traditional land- and arts-based teachings.
