Robots Bowl-A-Rama

Local girls from grades five to 12 will be gathering at the University of Victoria this weekend to construct robots in what could only be described as a futuristic bowl-a-rama. Organized by UVic’s Women in Engineering and Computer Science (WECS) outreach program, the April 12 “Equality Day Lego Robotics Festival for Girls” runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Engineering/Computer Science Building, room 258. It offers an excellent opportunity for girls to learn computer science and engineering concepts while having fun and being creative. Workshop participants will use LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT, a robotics toolset for children to build and program robots. The cost of the workshop is $20. Participants are asked to bring a lunch. On May 10, in honour of Mother’s Day, WECS will be offering science workshops for mothers, their daughters and sons in grades five and up. On June 14, in celebration of Father’s Day, WECS invites fathers, their daughters and sons in grades five and up to take part in a special workshop. For more information about the workshops or to register visit http://wecs.uvic.ca/ or call 472-5851.
