SPLIT IN PARKS PHILOSOPHY HURTS MORALE

A significant philosophical split among Parks Canada personnel is hurting morale and causing "no end of grief" to parks staff dedicated to ecological preservation, says Rick Searle, a geography instructor and the author of an upcoming book on the country's national parks system. Searle, who visited all of Canada's parks to research his book, says there are many "very committed people in Parks Canada but there are others willing to compromise and put people first" ahead of ecological integrity. Searle adds that a lack of funding, contracting out services and assigning employees from other departments to Parks Canada positions have all contributed to Parks Canada's malaise. Searle's book, tentatively titled Phantom Parks: The Dis-Appearance of Canada's National Parks, is scheduled to be published in the fall, 2000. [PP]
