Ice-road research
The Ring
Driving on ice roads in the far north is a normal occurrence for geographer and storm expert David Atkinson. In late April, Atkinson and colleagues drove the ice road between Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk, and later flew up even farther to Ulukhaktok and Sachs Harbour (pop. 80 people). His purpose was to interview residents about the impacts of weather (especially storms), as he says, “who knows more about northern weather than the people most affected by it?”
The tale the trees tell: droughts will be worse in BC
The Ring
Combined with the impacts of climate change and deforestation, the coastal regions of southern BC are very likely to be hit by a worse drought within the coming decades than any time in the last three to four centuries, according to a new report co-authored by graduating PhD student Bethany Coulthard at the University of Victoria.
El Niño & La Niña threaten BC coast
The Ring
Pacific research shows that extreme weather patterns—both hot and cold—could mean accelerated erosion in BC. As storm season approaches, BC coastal communities need to prepare for the possibility of extreme flooding and erosion that come with both El Niño and La Niña weather systems, according to new trans-Pacific research published in Nature Geoscience.
Model UN climate negotiations
The Ring
In an early preview of the challenges world leaders face when negotiating international agreements on climate change (such as this December’s UN meeting in Paris), two UVic students and a business professor got to embark on an opportunity of a lifetime—travelling to Switzerland to attend the Model United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations. This annual international event is hosted by leading business graduate students and professors across Europe and provides the opportunity for scholars studying climate change to engage in mock climate negotiations. These mock negotiations were an opportunity to engage in debate, to strategize towards fulfilling an assigned country’s interests and, as a collective, to negotiate a best-draft resolution to climate challenges facing the global community.
Sybil Seitzinger to head PICS
The Ring
Following a comprehensive international search, the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions enters a new leadership era. A renowned scientist who is an international leader in investigating the causes of environmental change is the new executive director of the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) based at UVic.
Weather balloons on campus
The Ring
From Nov. 10 to Jan. 22, folks in and around UVic may be surprised to sight some UFOs (unusual floating objects) in the skies above campus. No cause for alarm: it's just Environment Canada launching dozens of instrumented weather balloons from their…
Q&A — Tom Pedersen, PICS
The Ring
After six years as executive director of the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS), which is hosted and led by the University of Victoria, climate scientist Tom Pedersen is moving on to other opportunities. “It’s been challenging at times but it’s always been fun,” says Pedersen. “I took this job because I wanted to build something, to make a difference in an area I feel passionate about. I think we’ve made some progress.”
Climate and energy forum
The Ring
On Jan. 26, UVic and the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions will host a forum that will explore climate change from different perspectives including today’s energy sector, sustainable investments and society’s choices. The event, “A dialogue: c…
Putting the brakes on climate change
The Ring
It all began with a request from government. Could the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS), which is hosted and led by UVic, come up with an informative yet engaging way to explain the complicated science behind global warming? As a result, world-leading climate scientists—who were fortuitously based in Victoria—got together to create the first free, interactive online course in PICS’s Climate Insights 101 series, Climate Science Basics, which was launched by then-Environment Minister Terry Lake in August 2011.
UVic in regional climate awards
The Ring
UVic received an honourable mention at the Community Energy Association's 2013 Climate and Energy Action Awards for its part in Ready, Set, Solve, the CRD student climate challenge. The Office of Campus Planning and Sustainability and Waste Reductio…
