UVic has renamed the University Centre to recognize President Jamie Cassels, who finishes his time as university president this Fall after seven years in the role.

Cassels has been a faculty member at UVic for nearly 40 years and has served in senior leadership roles for more than half that time. The new building name, the Jamie Cassels Centre, recognizes his extraordinary contribution and long service to the university.

Under the Naming of Facilities and Physical Assets Policy, the university can name buildings in recognition of distinguished members of the university community who have made exceptional contributions to the university.

The university also has buildings or student residences named for former presidents Dr. David Turpin, president from 2000 to 2013; Dr. David Strong, president from 1990 to 2000; Dr. Howard E. Petch, president from 1975 to 1990; Dr. Hugh Ernest Farquhar, president from 1972 to 1974; Robert (Bob) T. D. Wallace, acting president from 1968 to 1969; and Dr. W. Harry Hickman, who served as the University of Victoria’s first acting president from 1963 to 1964.
