The Malahat Review celebrates golden anniversary

One of Canada’s leading literary journals is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Established in 1967 by UVic English professors Robin Skelton and John Peter, The Malahat Review has featured emerging and established writers, discovered promising new talent and presented perceptive critical comment on other works.
Current editor John Barton says, “It’s arguably one of the most iconic literary journals in Canada, and one of the oldest still publishing.” The journal has had five editors over its lifetime: Barton; Constance Rooke; Derk Wynand; Marlene Cookshaw; and Skelton.
On Nov. 8, the launch of the anniversary edition—celebrating Victoria’s literary scene—took place at Munro’s Books. Never-before-published works from late Canadian writers Emily Carr and P.K. Page appear alongside present and future literary masters.
UVic Libraries and Legacy Art Galleries are also planning, respectively, a limited edition publication about the journal and an exhibition devoted to the journal’s history and significance. Details will be shared in January 2018.
