Indigenous law graduate student wins top Canadian research award

UVic Law PhD student Aaron Mills was awarded the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Talent award. The award is given to a single student each year across all the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences in Canada whose research "brings forward ideas that help us understand and improve the world around us." Mills' work is at the forefront of the movement to restore and revitalize Indigenous systems of law.

Indigenous law graduate student wins top Canadian research award

UVic Law PhD student Aaron Mills received the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Talent award—one of its five “Impact Awards”—at a ceremony in Ottawa today. Mills’ work is at the forefront of the movement to restore and revitalize Indigenous systems of law, one of the central recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) has named the finalists for the 2016 Impact Awards. UVic was the only school with two finalists—law PhD candidate Aaron Mills and historian Dr. John Lutz. Separately, UVic Vice-President Research Dr. David Castle has joined the board of CANARIE.

UVic researchers’ recommendations to the Marijuana Task Force

As the federal government moves forward with legalization of cannabis, many lessons can be learned from the Canadian experience with legalization of alcohol. As 13 researchers from the University of Victoria’s Centre for Addictions Research of BC (CARBC) point out in their co-authored submission to the Task Force on Marijuana Legalization and Regulation in Canada—published today as a publicly available research bulletin—cannabis, like alcohol, is no ordinary commodity. A delicate balance is needed between the pressures for liberalization and addressing potential public and individual harms.
