BC budget supports UVic initiatives

On Feb. 20 the provincial government tabled Budget 2018 which includes support of a UVic law program that will be the first of its kind in the world, funding for tuition waivers for former youth in care and a change in the policies for financing of student housing, which will help with the construction of a new UVic residence.

World's first Indigenous law degree to be offered at UVic

February 21, 2018 - Media release

A new law program at the University of Victoria is the world's first to combine the intensive study of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous law, enabling people to work fluently across the two realms. Students will graduate with two professional degrees, one in Canadian Common Law (Juris Doctor or 'JD') and one in Indigenous Legal Orders (Juris Indigenarum Doctor or 'JID').

Impassioned legal scholar comes home to UVic

June 7, 2017 - The Ring

Tonkin is the recipient of a 2017 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, administered through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and on July 5, was named a Trudeau Scholar 2017 by the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation. He is the eighth UVic student (and the first in philosophy) to win the prestigious Trudeau scholarship since the program's inception in 2004.
