March 2015 Campus Plan update

The first phase of the process to update UVic’s official Campus Plan received excellent engagement and input from the campus and the surrounding community. The 2003 Campus Plan is being updated to provide a refreshed vision, guidelines and direction for future campus development, in topics such as building placement and parameters, transportation, and open and natural spaces. It also plays a key role in supporting the university’s academic priorities and commitments to sustainability.

New educational kit supports early childhood activities with Métis themes

The objects look simple. Hand-sized swatches of organza. Coloured paper. A star-shaped hole punch. A blanket and rolled socks. But the meaning they hold can be transformative. The educational kit of supplies and a colourful booklet of activities uses M&e#180;tis history to engage young children in physical activities, literacy and art, helping build cultural awareness as well as healthy lifelong habits.

Finals disrupted at UNBC?

March 5, 2015 - The Ring

Concern is mounting that final exams could be disrupted at Prince George and other UNBC campuses (including some courses at Langara College). UNBC’s Faculty Association issued a 72-hour strike notice on Monday, March 2. Negotiations have been ongoing since November, focusing on issues of tenure, promotion and salary.

Valerie King named ACM Fellow

Dr. Valerie King (computer science) has been named a 2014 ACM Fellow by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for her contributions to randomized algorithms, especially dynamic graph algorithms and fault tolerant distributed computing. Her work in randomized algorithms allows networked computers, working together to solve a problem, to recognize invading malware so that they can ignore the information sent by bad computers and continue to coordinate with the good ones. The association recognizes ACM members’ creativity and commitment to the study of computer science.

UVic VP named to board of academic leadership organization

University of Victoria Vice President External Relations Carmen Charette has been appointed as Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences, for a two-year term.  Charette is well-qualified for her new role.  Prior to joining UVic in 2012, she served as senior vice president at the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and then executive vice president for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Florin Diacu awarded 2015 Crawford Prize

Dr. Florin Diacu (mathematics) has been awarded the 2015 J.D. Crawford Prize from the Society for Industrial and Applied Mechanics for his study of the motion of celestial orbits and the geometrical nature of physical space. His research on celestial objects whose distances remain constant in time while moving in non-flat spaces (e.g. 3D spheres) built bridges between several branches of mathematics, a feat highly regarded among mathematicians. The Crawford Prize is given every two years to one individual for recent outstanding work on a topic in nonlinear science.

Watershed moments in Indigenous law bode well for UVic law programs

The summer of 2014 was a remarkable period in Canadian legal history. Within the span of three weeks, two Supreme Court of Canada judgments involving aboriginal title and treaty rights were brought down. Together, they significantly altered fundamental elements of national governance and current plans for economic development, as well as the legal landscape relating to land and resource entitlements.

Two UVic programs each awarded $500,000 for Diamond Jubilee scholarships

University of Victoria students will benefit from a new scholarship program to help shape the next generation of global leaders. The Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives and the Co-operative Education Program and Career Services have both received funding from the Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship program—a joint initiative of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), the Community Foundations of Canada and the Rideau Hall Foundation.

National symposium addresses methods and new horizons in theatre education

Canadian drama instructors gather at UVic to make sure they're giving students far more than just their next few lines. If you’ve ever seen actors at work—on stage, on screen, on the street or on television—you’ve seen the results of the kind of pedagogy happening daily in the Department of Theatre. But now a first-of-its-kind national symposium co-organized by theatre professor Conrad Alexandrowicz is questioning and examining traditional acting methods, as it addresses what’s been described as “the crisis of actor training in Canada.”

BikeMaps.org spins success across the globe

Victoria is a cycling city with more people taking to the bike paths each day—good news for the environment and for BikeMaps.org, a project lead by UVic geography professor Dr. Trisalyn Nelson and a team of researchers in UVic geography. “My initial idea was to build a website where cyclists could humorously vent about bad interactions with vehicles, other bikes, pedestrians and, yes, urban deer,” says Nelson. “I started planning the project and I quickly realized it wasn’t funny. The available data on cycling safety is abysmal.”

Passion for social change recognized with national teaching award

Child and Youth Care professor Jin-Sun Yoon wins prestigious national teaching award. “I’m an accidental academic; I never planned to be here,” says Jin-Sun Yoon, teaching professor with the University of Victoria’s School of Child and Youth Care (CYC). Yoon's path to professorship has been paved with the same whole-person commitment that has led her to become recognized for her transformative teaching career—selected as one of 10 university educators across Canada to receive this year’s prestigious 3M National Teaching Fellowship.
