The spirit of Shelagh Rogers

March 16, 2015 - The Ring

UVic’s new Chancellor is certainly no stranger to being in the public eye—or ear, as the case may be. Over her many years as a journalist and CBC Radio host/producer, Shelagh (after speaking to her for a few minutes, you really can’t think of her as “Ms. Rogers”) has travelled all over the country, gathering and sharing the stories of thousands of Canadians.

IdeaFest 2015 wrap-up

March 12, 2015 - The Ring

When does a disease turn into an epidemic? How do scientific and Indigenous knowledge intersect to help us prepare for tsunamis? How can we improve our wellness as we age? How do we teach tomorrow’s business leaders to think beyond the bottom line? These are just a few of the topics that were featured at the University of Victoria’s fourth annual IdeaFest, which ran March 2-7. More than 50 events—all free and open to the public—provided a glimpse into the world-class research and creative activity at UVic that’s having an impact on our lives and the world around us. A wrap-up of the activities is now available online as a UVic Storify album.

March 5, 2015 - The Ring

2015 is a banner year for UVic Law: its 40th anniversary. We often think of UVic Law as a young faculty, but it has now delivered four decades of first-class legal education.   On March 6 and 7, the faculty will celebrate this milestone with a series of events for alumni, faculty, students and friends. It is a time to take stock. What kind of law school is UVic? What distinctive contributions has it made to Canadian legal education over the last 40 years? Or, to put the question with a little more edge: Would British Columbia, would Canada, be any different if UVic Law had not been founded?

Day in the Life: Sean Adams, scientific glass blower

March 5, 2015 - The Ring

There is no question Sean Adams has made his mark on UVic: much of the world-renowned scientific research conducted on campus over the last two decades was produced with the help of instruments he created. Adams is a scientific glass blower in the Faculty of Science. He creates highly specialized glassworks for use in scientific experiments—the sorts of one-off things you’d never be able get from a commercial or industrial glass producer. “Researchers here are often creating new science for which equipment does not yet exist,” he explains. “They come to me with very specific needs and I work with them to design or modify equipment for their specific purposes.”
