Artificial reefs: junk or habitat?

Over the last 27 years, eight ships and one airplane have been intentionally sunk off the BC coast for the enjoyment of recreational divers—and to enhance habitat for local marine life. Yet artificial reefs remain controversial. Desiree Bulger, a master’s student in UVic's School of Environmental Studies, set out to find some answers.

Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women: a student perspective

December 7, 2018 - The Ring

On Dec. 6, 1989, an armed gunman entered Polytechnique Montréal and shot 28 people, murdering 14 women and injuring 10 other women and four men. On Dec. 5, 2018, almost 30 years after the massacre, UVic came together for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women—a day to remember the women who died in the massacre as well as countless others who have suffered violence.

The results are in: Giving Tuesday 2018 at UVic was the best one yet. On Nov. 27, in just 24 hours, more than 1,100 faculty, staff, students, donors and alumni came together to give more than $30,000 (and counting) in support of student clubs and activities on campus. Thank you to everyone who participated.

In Memoriam: Howard Petch

November 29, 2018 - The Ring

It is with great sadness that the university community marks the passing of Dr. Howard Petch, former President of the University of Victoria, on November 26 at the age of 93. Petch was the university’s fourth President, and is well-remembered for his 15 years in office guiding the campus through an era of immense change, and prioritizing programs and values that have become the defining characteristics of UVic today.
