Provincial grant helps UVic Child Care Services expand

Dec. 7, 2017 — UVic Child Care Services has received a $500,000 grant from the province towards expansion and revitalization of its child-care facilities.

“The University of Victoria is grateful for the investment from the Province’s Child Care Major Capital Funding Program towards our child-care services program,” says Jim Forbes, director of campus services, Student Affairs.” The province’s $500,000 contribution helps us with renovations that will create an additional 32 new spaces for pre-school aged children for the families of UVic students, faculty and staff.”

UVic Child Care Services is undertaking a multi-phased project to renovate existing buildings, for a plan that was approved by the Board of Governors in April 2016. The additional spaces will bring UVic’s total full-time child care spaces to 116.

Construction on Complex B began in October 2017. The Complex B renovations will transform the current large, open, interior space into two new child care centres with shared kitchen and separate exterior entrances for each centre.  Sustainability of the building will be improved with upgrades to LED lighting and low-flush toilets.

UVic Child Care last expanded in 2001 when the Harry Lou Poy Child Care complex was opened. Child Care Complex B was built in 1993.
