CAVI lecture: Professor Alejandro Sinner, Thurs. 8 Mar. @ 7:30 pm, CLE A212

Classical Association of Vancouver Island

The Sixth meeting of the 2017-18 academic year will take place on Thursday, 8 March 2018 at 7:30 pm in Clearihue A212.

Professor Alejandro Sinner (Assistant Professor, UVic) will present a lecture entitled, "Beyond foundations: social complexity, transformations and diversity in NE Spain during the Late Republic."

Since 2016 the University of Victoria has been excavating the Ibero-Roman site of ancient Ilduro. Part of this project is run as an archaeological field school for students to gain valuable professional training.

The goal of the project is to redefine perceptions about how each Roman provincial community had its roots in a unique and dynamic, cultural heterogeneous milieu. The paper aims to introduce the site of Ilduro while exploring the social and cultural complexity of the late Republican period in NE Spain by comparing it with two contemporary settlements mentioned by Livy: the oppidum of Valentia and the oppidum of Castra Aelia.

The Classical Association of Vancouver Island is UVic’s organization for people interested in the Greek and Roman worlds. Everyone is welcome.  To join CAVI and be on our mailing list, please contact: Dr. Brendan Burke (bburke@uvic.ca) or (grsadmin@uvic.ca) and tel: 250 721 8514.
