Graduate Certificate in Health Terminology and Interoperability Standards

Admission requirements

  1. For admission, applicants are required to have a baccalaureate degree. A background in information technology or health would be an asset.
  2. To be admitted, applicants must satisfy all regular admissions requirements of the UVic Faculty of Graduate Studies.
  3. Applicants without a baccalaureate degree or equivalent, but who can demonstrate significant relevant professional expertise or experience who wish to pursue only the certificate option may be admitted if they are recommended by the School.
  4. The Graduate Certificate Program in Health Terminology and Interoperability Standards may also be completed by our currently registered HINF graduate students in the MSc, PhD or NUHI (Master of Nursing and Master of Science in Health Informatics) programs.

For external applicants

External applicants (not currently a registered Graduate student in the School of Health Information Science)

To apply, you need to complete a UVic Graduate Studies online application.

Step 1

Standard UVic Graduate Studies Application Package:

  • You will need to obtain the appropriate transcripts, assessment reports, test scores and other documents as outlined in the application package.
  • If you are an international student, please visit the UVic Graduate admissions page for the information on minimum requirements, proper submission of your documents, Language proficiency, visas, and more.

Step 2

Materials required by the School of Health Information Science:

1. Two Assessment Reports from academic referees.

  • To strengthen your application, we recommend that your referees attach a Letter of Reference in addition to the Assessment Report.
  • If it has been more than five years since you last attended a post-secondary institution, we recommend that you include two Assessment Reports from current or former employers in place of academic referees.

2. Letter of Intent (1-2 pages) which includes:

  • Your rationale for wanting to pursue the Graduate Certificate Program in Health Terminology and Interoperability Standards;
  • Your thoughts on how you will use the knowledge learned from this program in your workplace;
  • Your thoughts on ways the program will improve or change your career

3. Personal Resume (maximum 4 pages) which includes:

  • Your educational background, employment history, professional/academic affiliations and other achievements such as publications or awards.

Step 3

Submit the online Graduate Studies Application Package along with the School’s requirements to the Graduate Admissions and Records Office (GARO).

For internal applicants

Internal applicants (currently a registered Graduate student in the School of Health Information Science)

What if I don't have a baccalaureate degree or equivalent?

If you do not have a baccalaureate degree or equivalent and are interested in a certificate in health terminology standards, you should consider the Professional Micro-certificate in Health Terminology and Interoperability Standards in partnership with the Division on Continuing Studies at the University of Victoria.

Application deadlines:

January entry is October 1.
