Marcus Milwright
Syrian artifacts under threat
The Ring
Protecting and learning from Middle Eastern antiquities When news broke in August that Syrian archaeologist Khaleed al-Asaad had been killed by ISIS for trying to protect his country’s cultural legacy from destruction and looting, it sent a chill through the heart of Art History and Visual Studies professor Marcus Milwright. An archaeologist and professor of Islamic art and architecture, Milwright has worked extensively in Syria—including the ancient city of Palmyra, the UNESCO World Heritage Site for which Khaleed al-Asaad was the head of antiquities.
Whodunnit of a WWI diary
The Ring
It’s a history mystery worthy of its own exhibition. When Dr. Marcus Milwright, of UVic's recently renamed Art History and Visual Studies department, began planning his upcoming exhibit The Arts of World War I, he knew there was one item in the university library that he just had to use: a beautiful two-volume leather diary set illustrated with watercolours and pen-and-ink drawings of life during wartime. The Ring
Passion, energy and a commitment to making the world a little bit better tomorrow for everyone—these are the qualities that are shared by each and every recipient of a Craigdarroch Research Award over the past decade, and this year’s slate of recipients is no exception. The 2013 Craigdarroch Research Awards, which honour achievements in research at UVic, were presented at a reception event on May 2.

Milwright book "Outstanding"
The Ring
History in Art associate professor Marcus Milwright’s An Introduction to Islamic Archaeology (Edinburgh University Press, 2010) has been named an Outstanding Academic Title of 2011 by the magazine, Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries. Peer reviewed by Harvard archaeology professor C.C. Lamberg-Karlovsky, Milwright’s textbook is described as “an outstanding introduction that can be read with profit by general readers as well as professionals . . . highly recommended.” Milwright, the director of UVic’s Medieval Studies program, is also speaking at an international conference devoted to the Hajj at the British Museum in March, prior to an April residency at the prestigious Shangri La Centre for Islamic Arts and Cultures in Honolulu.
