Victoria Hand Project extends reach

A UVic initiative that provides 3D-printed prosthetic hands to amputees in developing countries, will now extend its reach to help people in underserved and remote communities in Canada and the US. This initiative led by Nick Dechev, professor of mechanical engineering and ED of the Victoria Hand Project, received a $1-million award by the 2019 TD Ready Challenge, announced Dec. 3. Funding will also initiate UVic research trials on 3D-printed spinal braces to treat scoliosis in children.

Student Ambassadors boost student emergency fund

Using profits from selling flowers and frames at convocation, this year's cohort of Student Ambassadors is donating $1,000 to the Student Emergency Fund, which supports students who are in financial crises and need immediate assistance. An anonymous alumni donor surprised the group—matching their contribution to the Student Emergency Fund this year, making their total gift $2,000.

A new tool for understanding kelp decline and its impact on BC coastal habitats drew upon British admiralty charts from 1858 to 1956. UVic geographer Maycira Costa and research colleagues have created the first historical digital map of BC’s coastal kelp forests to further investigate this loss of kelp.

A nationally recognized scholar, UVic sociologist Cecilia Benoit has illuminated the need for equitable treatment of marginalized populations, especially women, for more than 25 years. To support this important work, the Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation has awarded Benoit a $225,000 fellowship over the next three years.

Margaret Fireman understands that language upholds her culture. Without language, oral traditions and wisdom passed down from her Cree ancestors would be lost. Language, she says, is closely tied to the land. And so when Fireman, a residential school survivor and then-manager of Chisasibi Heritage and Cultural Centre in northeastern Quebec, was searching for a program to bolster the preservation of her community's language of James Bay Cree, she chose carefully.

Mini-satellite to explore the universe

Students from the University of Victoria are designing a tiny satellite with big aspirations. When a robotic arm on the International Space Station tosses it into orbit in 2020, the satellite—funded through a national post-secondary funding initiative of the Canadian Space Agency—that's no bigger than a two-liter carton of milk will become a vital tool to help astronomers and cosmologists better understand the origins and future of the universe.
