This May, an inaugural event—the REACH Awards—will combine the Teaching Excellence Awards with the Craigdarroch Research Awards into a single event that celebrates the extraordinary teachers and researchers who lead the way in dynamic learning and make a vital impact at UVic, in the classroom and beyond.

Shostakovich cycle marks quartet’s anniversary

From one generation to the next, teachers pass along the skills and techniques instilled in them by their mentors. Now, the School of Music’s internationally acclaimed Lafayette String Quartet will honour their own mentor with a rare performance cycle of all 15 string quartets by 20th century Soviet composer, Dmitri Shostakovich.

Indigenous Resurgence Coordinator

Chaw-win-is is the recently appointed Indigenous Resurgence Coordinator within the Faculty of Education. “This position and others initiatives like it across Canada,” says Chaw-win-is, “are a result of the on-going efforts of Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous allies all across Canada who have been generating awareness about colonization within the education system.”

“Poles tell the story of who we are,” said Chief Rande Cook (K'alapa), a contemporary multi-disciplinary artist and visiting Audain Professor of Contemporary Art Practice of the Pacific Northwest, during the HIWEST panel on honouring Indigenous poles, on Sept. 30 at UVic’s downtown art gallery.

Raising awareness with class and art

The Ring

One of the best things about an annual guest teaching position is the diversity it offers students. Now in its sixth year in the visual arts department, the Audain Professorship of Contemporary Art Practice of the Pacific Northwest has benefited from a variety of approaches and practices by previous professors—including the likes of Governor General’s Award-winner Rebecca Belmore. But Rande Cook has one unique aspect not shared by his forerunners: he is the first Audain professor to represent a Vancouver Island nation.

University 101

Updated: April 6, 2016 An introduction to poetry, eye witness memory, neuropolitics, the politics of the refugee crisis in a Canadian context, a short history of early Protestantism in England and functions of the human immune system. These are just some of the many topics covered in Uni 101, Uni 102 and Uni 201 — a program at UVic offering free, non-credit university courses to people who face significant barriers to post-secondary education. On March 31, University 101 celebrated its 10th anniversary.

2016 Provost’s Engaged Scholars

Dr. Jessica Ball (child and youth care) and Dr. John Lutz (history) have been named the 2016 recipients of the Provost’s Engaged Scholar Award. This is the third year for the annual awards program, which celebrates the integration of outstanding scholarship, inspired teaching and real-life community engagement. It recognizes tenured faculty members who have achieved great distinction as community-engaged scholars.

Reclaiming the reef net fishery

Almost a decade ago, XEMŦOLTW̱ Nick Claxton told his family he wanted to revitalize the reef net fishery, a fishing practice unique to the Straits Salish people and banned by the colonial government 100 years ago. His uncle advised: “You can’t just go fishing. You must first build a ceremonial net.” And so began the spiritual, cultural and educational journey that Claxton considers his life’s work. It also became his PhD dissertation in curriculum and instruction at the University of Victoria—a research study designed to revitalize the knowledge, ceremony and practice that was nearly lost.

The tension in the operating room was palpable as the patient’s heart rate skyrocketed unexpectedly during surgery on her fractured ankle. Julie, the 19-year-old soccer player under local anaesthetic, worriedly asked what was wrong. The medical and nursing team reassured her as they quickly assessed and took action to stabilize her condition. Despite its location in the Royal Jubilee Hospital, this was not a typical operating room. Nor was Julie a typical patient; she’s actually a life-like mannequin. Both are part of the new $2.9-million Centre for Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Learning, a partnership between UVic’s School of Nursing, UBC’s Faculty of Medicine and Island Health.

Science educator award for Zehr

University of Victoria neuroscientist E. Paul Zehr remembers the precise moment when his research career shifted gears and science communications became a major part of his activities as a scholar and academic. “It was a Friday afternoon in 2007 and I was searching Google Scholar for publication information on one of my papers,” he recalls. He was pondering how many people his work actually affected. His most cited paper at the time had about 150 citations. But what if that meant only 150 people had read it? Was that acceptable impact? “For me, the answer was no,” he says. “I decided then and there that I wasn’t satisfied with standard measures of academic productivity and impact and instead wanted to reach larger groups more directly.”
