Singing to fight the stigma of dementia

The Ring

"Voices in Motion" is an intergenerational community choir for persons with dementia, their family caregivers and high school students. It's also a UVic research study looking into how participation in an intergenerational choir might foster social engagement and caregiver well-being, improve quality of life for persons with dementia, and reduce some of the stigma surrounding memory loss.

Mercer Report visits UVic

On Jan. 16, the Rick Mercer Report launched its final season on CBC. The first episode features the comedian and satirist's visit to UVic campus last fall in which Mercer gets a brainwave assessment in Olav Krigolson's neuroeconomics lab, test-drives a 3D-printed prosthetic at the Victoria Hand Project lab and attempts to sing opera with music prof. Benjamin Butterfield.

Music school celebrates 50 years

When maestro Timothy Vernon raises his baton at the School of Music's gala 50th anniversary concert on Dec. 2, it won’t simply be in recognition of the honorary Doctorate of Music he received at spring Convocation.

Fibre-optic cables, power lines and ecological impact are key factors in how music is produced and consumed. On Sept. 8, anthropologist Alexandrine Boudreault-Fournier with colleagues Joseph Salem and Jentery Sayers will join researchers from Europe, Asia and the Americas for the sound of music.

Students from the humanities, social sciences, fine arts and law—now back in Victoria after a transformative trip overseas and also in Winnipeg—came together for a powerful and challenging field school that brought them to historic sites in Europe and taught them valuable lessons about Canada.

UVic students are currently visiting historic sites in Europe in a field school examining migration, the refugee crisis and memorialization of the Holocaust. And the learning doesn't stop in Europe: they'll be at the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in mid August, then home to UVic for a symposium.

Guggenheim Fellowship

Internationally recognized composer and UVic music professor Dániel Péter Biró can now add one of North America's most prestigious awards to his list of honours—the Guggenheim Fellowship. He'll be using the one-year award worth $50,000 US to reflect on one of the most important issues of today: global migration.

Shostakovich cycle marks quartet’s anniversary

Love sports? Play an instrument? With the brand-new Vikes Band course, you can now combine both—for credit! A new initiative between the School of Music and Vikes Athletics, Vikes Band (MUS 189) is a new for-credit course that will rehearse and perform at Vikes Varsity events and special events on campus. If you played in your high school band or just play for fun, you can still put those skills to use to play game-day music—even if you aren’t a music major.

Masterminds 2015

This year’s series of Masterminds free public lectures traverses an eclectic terrain of ideas. A singer, trombone player and a tuba player meet on stage to play music and tell stories about some of their life-changing musical experiences. A computer scientist compares historical and current photographs of mountain glaciers as part of an investigation into the effects of climate change in the West. A medical anthropologist combines research, storytelling and zombie metaphors as part of a cautionary tale of stress in our culture. And a linguist and app developer uses sound and video to demonstrate how we produce language.

A historian who is increasing our understanding of Islam. An engineer and a computer scientist who are making our lives easier with new technologies. A nurse who is helping the terminally ill and their families cope. And a performing artist who inspires us to better appreciate the world around us.
