New research led by researchers at the University of Victoria raises serious concerns about the ability of marine protected areas (MPAs) to effectively protect wide-ranging iconic species, such as sharks and rays.

40th anniversary of UVic Law

2015 is a banner year for UVic Law: its 40th anniversary. We often think of UVic Law as a young faculty, but it has now delivered four decades of first-class legal education. On March 6 and 7, the faculty will celebrate this milestone with a series of events for alumni, faculty, students and friends. It is a time to take stock. What kind of law school is UVic? What distinctive contributions has it made to Canadian legal education over the last 40 years? Or, to put the question with a little more edge: Would British Columbia, would Canada, be any different if UVic Law had not been founded?

Celebrating exceptional staff The celebration of this year’s President’s Distinguished Service Award recipients, hosted by President Jamie Cassels, took place Feb. 25 at the University Club. Before the recipients were named, Valerie Kuehne, UVic’s acting vice-president academic and provost, recognized and congratulated all those who had been nominated.

There is no question Sean Adams has made his mark on UVic: much of the world-renowned scientific research conducted on campus over the last two decades was produced with the help of instruments he created. Adams is a scientific glass blower in the Faculty of Science. He creates highly specialized glassworks for use in scientific experiments—the sorts of one-off things you’d never be able get from a commercial or industrial glass producer. “Researchers here are often creating new science for which equipment does not yet exist,” he explains. “They come to me with very specific needs and I work with them to design or modify equipment for their specific purposes.”

The objects look simple. Hand-sized swatches of organza. Coloured paper. A star-shaped hole punch. A blanket and rolled socks. But the meaning they hold can be transformative. The educational kit of supplies and a colourful booklet of activities uses M&e#180;tis history to engage young children in physical activities, literacy and art, helping build cultural awareness as well as healthy lifelong habits.

Charette named to federation board

University of Victoria Vice President External Relations Carmen Charette has been appointed as Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences, for a two-year term. Charette is well-qualified for her new role. Prior to joining UVic in 2012, she served as senior vice president at the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and then executive vice president for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

After 25 years of queer activism, writing professor and filmmaker Maureen Bradley is still changing the world—she’s just having more fun doing it now, thanks to her debut feature film, Two 4 One. Billed as the first transgendered romantic comedy, Two 4 One offers a bittersweet look at a couple in an unimaginable predicament: after an ill-advised one-night stand, Miriam and Adam both wind up pregnant.

Manuscripts and white gloves

When it comes to handling old manuscripts, there’s no fooling around for UVic researcher Dr. Jamie Kemp—the gloves are definitely off. Despite the lingering meme of white-glove clad researchers delicately handling archival material, Kemp says bare skin is best when it comes to the centuries-old books in UVic Special Collections and University Archives.

Arctic Inspiration award for FOXY

Makenzie Zouboules, third-year UVic honours political science and writing co-op student, is something of a celebrity in her hometown of Yellowknife, NWT. Last month, along with FOXY co-founders Candice Lys and Nancy MacNeill, Zouboules accepted a $1-million Arctic Inspiration Prize for their work with northern youth. Originally part of Lys’ PhD dissertation on public health promotion, FOXY (Fostering Open eXpression among Youth) is a participatory research project aimed at talking with young people about sexual health, sexuality and relationships across the three northern Canadian territories.

Passing the torch

At the end of 2014, Murray Farmer concluded his term as UVic Chancellor, and was succeeded in the post by Shelagh Rogers. At the end of December, Farmer had served an amazing 150 months on the UVic Board of Governors, making him one of the longest-serving elected or appointed board members.

A legacy of leadership

If UVic Chancellor Murray Farmer has a recurring dream, it must surely include the words “Admitto Te,” or “I admit you.” After all, he has spoken those words more than 17,000 times in the past six years, presiding over 79 convocation ceremonies. Each time, the words were accompanied by a warm smile and a gentle tap on the head of the student with his cap, as he congratulated them on his or her accomplishments. Farmer’s term as Chancellor wraps up on Dec. 31, after six memorable years as the titular head of the university. His connection with UVic, however, goes back much further—back, in fact, to the earliest days of the university.
