You would be forgiven if you believed that Daphne Donaldson had invented the phrase “keep calm and carry on.”  After a 30-year career at UVic and many years as the university’s emergency planner, she concedes that “the moment I hear a fire truck I hesitate because I wonder if something has occurred. I’m attuned to those sorts of noises.”

Over her many years as a journalist and CBC Radio host/producer, Shelagh (after speaking to her for a few minutes, you really can’t think of her as “Ms. Rogers”) has travelled all over the country, gathering and sharing the stories of thousands of Canadians.

Day in the Life: Sean Adams, scientific glass blower

There is no question Sean Adams has made his mark on UVic: much of the world-renowned scientific research conducted on campus over the last two decades was produced with the help of instruments he created. Adams is a scientific glass blower in the Faculty of Science. He creates highly specialized glassworks for use in scientific experiments—the sorts of one-off things you’d never be able get from a commercial or industrial glass producer. “Researchers here are often creating new science for which equipment does not yet exist,” he explains. “They come to me with very specific needs and I work with them to design or modify equipment for their specific purposes.”

Thanks to the Online Academic Community (OAC), current University of Victoria employees and students can now create their own websites and blogs—all you need is a NetLink ID. With more than 100 themes and plugins available, UVic faculty, staff and students can create, customize and manage their own sites—professional or personal—through a university-supported WordPress platform.

Help Desk expands services and locations

The Computer Help Desk has expanded its operations to provide more knowledgeable staff, extended hours and twice the number of locations. Faculty, staff and students can now contact the Help Desk by telephone and email from 8 a.m.-11 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. weekends, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on stat holidays; and visit any one of eight physical locations.

2014 Staff Mentorship Program

Providing briefs about new administrative processes, upcoming events and looming deadlines that are relevant to the broadest range of faculty and staff, the Campus Checklist aims to improve on-campus communication and reduce single-issue campus-wide “blast” emails.

Goodbye uHire… Hello UVic Careers

It’s time to wave a final farewell to the uHire job posting system as Human Resources gears up to welcome UVic Careers, the new online job management system that will go live in Sept. 2014. Beginning Sept. 8, the UVic Careers system will be the recruitment tool for CUPE 951, CUPE 917, Exempt Support, Management Excluded and PEA positions.
