UVic Libraries has acquired a rare print edition of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar and revealed this one-of-a-kind volume on Oct. 26 in time for a lecture at UVic on Plath's birthdate, Oct. 27. This unique volume features original sketches added by hand by Plath's own daughter, the artist and writer Frieda Hughes.

At its August meeting, the UVic Foundation approved a record $14.5-million budget to support students and the university’s 2016-17 academic mission—an increase of $600,000 from last year. The foundation also created a pilot Fossil-Fuel-Free Fund for donors who wish to create new endowments that will not be invested in companies with coal, oil or natural gas reserves.
A UVic biochemistry student known for his passion for philanthropy and science has won one of Canada's most prestigious awards for outstanding leadership. Tuition waivers for up to 15 students each year for those from government care Lilia Zaharieva whispers her question with genuine awe. “They gave how much?” she asks, hearing about the $2-million donation from the Sisters of St. Ann earmarked for the University of Victoria’s Youth in Care award. As a recipient herself, she knows firsthand the life-altering significance of such generosity. “What an amazing gift to give,” she says. “What fantastic help.”
