When UVic student Simone Blais was invited to attend a 2016 summit in Toronto for Indigenous and racialized students at the start of the Black Lives Matter movement, she jumped at the opportunity. It was a profound experience, one that compelled her to question the usefulness of post-secondary education. But Blaise has since used her experiences outside of the classroom to build on her studies.

Stepping up to the challenge

Rory Hills’ childhood fascination with science was born out of pure curiosity about the natural environment. He didn’t associate science with any significant world problems. That all changed when UVic researcher Andrew Weaver delivered a talk at Hills’ high school about the future impact of climate change.

“COVID-19 really turned my world upside-down.”

June 24, 2020 - The Ring

Close to 2,000 students received the COVID-19 Support Bursary between March and June, 2020. The university initially committed $200,000 to meet the immediate challenges students were facing as a result of the pandemic, from lost jobs, to technology issues, to urgent housing needs. Within weeks, hundreds of alumni, community members, staff and faculty contributed to the bursary to help the university meet the overwhelming demand for support.

Focus on education

July 8, 2019 -

Four students from Africa are completing PhDs at UVic with the help of donors and UVic’s Faculty of Education. Godwin Nnko, Kassim Dadi, William Pastory and Patrick Makokoro are receiving support from the Millennium Futures Fund and the Dr. Jean Downie Dey Memorial Award.
