Solid Carbon receiving $24M to advance ocean-based carbon dioxide removal

UVic welcomes today’s announcement of $24-million over six years through the Government of Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) to advance the Solid Carbon research project—one of the most promising ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) initiatives of the modern era to combat the climate crisis.

A new study published in the Marine Ecology Progress Series highlights a resilient sea sponge’s response to its changing environment - captured rare footage by Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) seafloor cameras off the BC coast for over four years, marking the longest continuous recording of these ancient but remarkably active animals in the wild.

History lesson: Identifying a climate ‘tipping point’ for ocean deoxygenation

Massive volcanic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions contributing to an extreme global ocean deoxygenation event over 120 million years ago has modern day implications for understanding a climate warming “tipping point,” according to new research published in Nature this week, led by a scientist at Ocean Networks Canada, a UVic initiative.

Ocean Networks Canada, a University of Victoria initiative, welcomes today’s announcement of the new marine protected area (MPA) Tang.ɢwan — ḥačxʷiqak — Tsig̱is (ThT) by the Haida Nation, Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, Pacheedaht First Nation, Quatsino First Nation, and the Government of Canada.
