Sandborn, Pauly, honorary citizens

February 24, 2016 - The Ring

Victoria city council has selected Environmental Law Centre legal director Calvin Sandborn (law) and Bernie Pauly (nursing, psychology) as two of the city's 14 honourary citizens for 2011. The award was presented on Jan.19 by Mayor Dean Fortin, in recognition of Sandborn's contributions to environmental protection and sustainability education on Vancouver Island and Pauly's community work on social issues, including homelessness.

New hospital simulation centre enhances health students' learning

The tension in the operating room was palpable as the patient’s heart rate skyrocketed unexpectedly during surgery on her fractured ankle. Julie, the 19-year-old soccer player under local anaesthetic, worriedly asked what was wrong. The medical and nursing team reassured her as they quickly assessed and took action to stabilize her condition. Despite its location in the Royal Jubilee Hospital, this was not a typical operating room. Nor was Julie a typical patient; she’s actually a life-like mannequin. Both are part of the new $2.9-million Centre for Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Learning, a partnership between UVic’s School of Nursing, UBC’s Faculty of Medicine and Island Health.

Island Health grants fuel UVic research

January 21, 2016 - The Ring

Improving dementia care, stroke recovery and cancer support services are among the goals of eight newly funded projects involving University of Victoria health researchers. Each of the projects is receiving $15,000 from Island Health through its new Collaborative Research Grant Competition, which aims to strengthen ties between the health agency (formerly known as the Vancouver Island Health Authority, or VIHA) and its academic partners.

BC nursing award for Marjorie MacDonald

January 21, 2016 - The Ring

Dr. Marjorie MacDonald (nursing) was presented the 2015 award for Excellence in Advancing Nursing Knowledge and Research by the Association of Registered Nurses of BC. This award recognizes nurses who conduct research with demonstrated practical applications, serve as mentors to beginning researchers, promote the application of research findings into nursing practice, and consistently demonstrate excellence, inclusion and innovation in the nursing profession.
