UVic researchers’ recommendations to the Marijuana Task Force

As the federal government moves forward with legalization of cannabis, many lessons can be learned from the Canadian experience with legalization of alcohol. As 13 researchers from the University of Victoria’s Centre for Addictions Research of BC (CARBC) point out in their co-authored submission to the Task Force on Marijuana Legalization and Regulation in Canada—published today as a publicly available research bulletin—cannabis, like alcohol, is no ordinary commodity. A delicate balance is needed between the pressures for liberalization and addressing potential public and individual harms.

Prime Minister's Youth Council

On July 19, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the creation of the Prime Minister’s Youth Council, a body of 30 young Canadians aged 16 to 24, who will provide non-partisan advice to the Prime Minister on national issues such as employment, access to education, building stronger communities as well as climate change and clean growth, among others.

New research on the future of BC’s most important resource from the POLIS Project on Ecological Governance With the replacement of its over a century-old Water Act with the new Water Sustainability Act in 2014, British Columbia has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to modernize its freshwater legislation and usher in a new era of water stewardship. The Water Sustainability Act has many promising features that can better protect the province’s freshwater resources. Yet full implementation of the new act hinges on passing critical supporting regulations that will provide the necessary details to make the act fully functional.

Economic role for universities is key, says Cassels

Building new programs and expanding capacity in high-demand areas to meet the needs of both students and the new economy is a key role for BC postsecondary institutions, says University of Victoria President Jamie Cassels. Cassels was speaking to an audience of 160 business leaders in Vancouver April 24 during a panel on “Institutions as Economic Enablers” that was part of the “Putting BC To Work” business forum hosted by the Business Council of BC and CKNW AM980.
