Solid Carbon receiving $24M to advance ocean-based carbon dioxide removal

UVic welcomes today’s announcement of $24-million over six years through the Government of Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) to advance the Solid Carbon research project—one of the most promising ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) initiatives of the modern era to combat the climate crisis.

Disability advocate Michael Prince named to Order of Canada

Over his 38 years at UVic, the acting dean of the Faculty of Human and Social Development (HSD) has built a reputation as a social and public policy expert who cares about equity issues, from child poverty and housing to veterans’ supports and disability rights. On Dec 18, Governor General Mary Simon honoured Prince’s long career by making him a member of the Order of Canada.

Boost to nurse practitioner program supports primary health care

Fifteen more nurse practitioners (NPs) will be trained at the University of Victoria this fall, helping boost the number of professionals able to offer primary health care to the more than 800,000 British Columbians without a family doctor.      New funding of $532,500 from the BC government will expand the number of seats available in the Master of Science in Nursing – Nurse Practitioner program by a third to 50 places available this September.

Canada and Spain scientists establish new Antarctic Ocean observatory

January 16, 2024 - Media release

Canadian and European experts in polar observation are joining forces in a new partnership that will see Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) operating a subsea observatory at the Spanish Antarctic Station, providing year-round, near real-time data on ocean conditions there—the first time that ONC will extend its ocean monitoring outside Canadian waters.
