Gender-inclusive signs coming to washrooms

September 2, 2016 - The Ring

Single-stall washrooms will soon be identified with gender-inclusive universal signing as part of the university’s continuing commitment to meet the needs of a diverse campus community. More than 75 washrooms across campus are being posted with new signs to indicate what facilities are located inside—toilets, urinals, change tables, showers, and whether they are wheelchair accessible. The signing project is expected to be finished by the end of October.

An international conference, led by the new UVic Chair in Transgender Studies Aaron Devor, brought together some of the world's top researchers, opinion leaders, transgender community activists and students this month to explore the history of transgender activism and crucial issues which impact the lives of trans and gender-nonconforming people.

World’s only chair in transgender studies

A million dollar donation to establish a chair in transgender studies—the first of its kind—will make all the difference to students such as Alyx MacAdams, who self-identifies as a genderqueer and trans-masculine person. “I am very grateful that this chair now exists, and I look forward to participating in and witnessing what happens over the next few years,” says MacAdams.
