A second Giller Prize for Esi Edugyan

Internationally acclaimed UVic writing alumna Esi Edugyan has won the 2018 Scotiabank Giller Prize for her latest novel, Washington Black. Edugyan wins $100,000 on this, the 25th anniversary of Canada’s richest literary award—and also earns the distinction of being one of only three authors to twice win the Giller Prize, alongside M.G. Vassanji and Alice Munro.

Bill Gaston (writing) has won the 2018 City of Victoria Butler Book Prize. Separately, Brad Buckham (engineering) and David Nelles (School of Earth and Ocean Sciences) were honoured with a Teaching Award of Excellence by Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia at their annual conference last month.

Schulich Leader scholars choose UVic

August 22, 2018 - Media release

Two BC high school students have received prestigious scholarship awards as they launch into their first year of study at the University of Victoria. Spencer Hancock of Coombs, a graduate of Ballenas Secondary School in Parksville, is recipient of the $100,000 2018 Schulich Leader Scholarship in Engineering. Karlee Zaruk, of Oak Bay High School in Oak Bay is recipient of the $80,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship in Science.

Three from UVic awarded 3M National Student Fellowships, recognizing leadership

Three of 10 prestigious 3M National Student Fellowships have been awarded to students in UVic's Faculty of Social Sciences. Cara Samuel (psychology), Maxwell Nicholson (economics) and Michael Graeme (anthropology and environmental studies) join seven others to become Canada's 3M fellowship recipients for 2018.
