Stepping up to the challenge

Rory Hills’ childhood fascination with science was born out of pure curiosity about the natural environment. He didn’t associate science with any significant world problems. That all changed when UVic researcher Andrew Weaver delivered a talk at Hills’ high school about the future impact of climate change.

Four UVic Vanier scholars

June 19, 2020 - The Ring

Four University of Victoria researchers are named Vanier Canada Graduate Scholars in an annual competition announced today by the Government of Canada. Vanier scholars, who receive $50,000 funding each year for three years, demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies. The scholarships are earmarked for social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health.

3M National Student Fellows

Two of 10 of this year's prestigious 3M National Student Fellowships have been awarded to UVic students. Hanna Jacobsen (sociology and gender studies), and Madeleine Kenyon (philosophy) join eight others to become Canada’s 2020 3M fellowship recipients.

Trudeau scholar addresses gender violence

May 6, 2020 - The Ring

Can Indigenous diplomatic legal principles help lead communities away from gender violence? Jasmine Dionne, a UVic PhD student in political science, is working with the Cree and Metis community of Saka Wiyiniwak (Cree for “Boreal Forest Peoples”) in Northeastern Alberta to reimplement Indigenous legal principles, as part of a three-year scholarship, announced this month by the Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation. She is one of only 16 Canadian doctoral students receiving a $180,000 award.
